WATKINS GLEN, N. Y. – Brett Moffitt copped the Great Outdoors RV Superstore 100, a NASCAR K&N Pro Series East race at Watkins Glen International late Friday afternoon.
The victor, who started 21st and recovered from an early race spin, drove the Gunma Toyopet Toyota.
“It was certainly an eventful day,” Moffitt said. “I got spun early and ripped the front-fender off. Ultimately, I was down but once I got up to the lead, everything worked out.”
His victory came at the expense of Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series driver Erik Jones, who led going into the mid-race, full-field mandatory stop, only to be unfamiliar with the rule and failing to stop. Noah Gregson also didn’t stop. As a result, Jones and Gregson were assessed with a one-lap penalty after the restart.
Jones had started last in the 25-car field after qualifications were rained out. The field was set by owner points with Tyler Ankrum and Tyler Dippel occupying the front row.
After the restart, Brett Moffit and Will Rodgers, the 2017 victor, battled for the lead with Moffit holding forth until the checkered flag.
Moffit’s margin of victory over the hard-charging Rodgers was .356 seconds.
Scott Heckert took third with Spencer Davis fourth and Sam Mayer fifth.
Bubba Wallace trailed in sixth.
Jones could do no better than 19th with Gregson 20th, both a lap down.
