Presenters Include World-Renowned Motorsports Safety, Chassis, Aero Experts
INDIANAPOLIS (Nov. 9, 2011) – Indianapolis will once again play host to the strongest gathering of motorsports safety experts when the third International Motorsports Industry Show (IMIS) kicks off with the 2011 Safety and Technical Conference presented by Safety-Kleen Dec. 7-8 at the Indiana Convention Center.
IMIS is a three-day trade show featuring seminars, conferences and hundreds of exhibitors showcasing the latest and greatest in racing parts and technology at the Indiana Convention Center in downtown Indianapolis Dec. 8-10.
The safety segment of the IMIS Safety and Technical Conference will bring together a world-class panel of 18 racing safety and engineering experts sharing insight for racers of every discipline and at every level. The 2011 Aero Plus segment of the IMIS Safety and Technical Conference will include the most comprehensive motorsports aerodynamics panel ever assembled, while the chassis/powertrain segment will offer extraordinary insight into building, maintaining and setting up race cars. All three segments of the IMIS Safety and Technical Conference will present topics and advancements that will benefit the weekend racer as much as the professional teams in attendance.
Kirk Russell, former vice president of competition for Championship Auto Racing Teams (CART) and a world-renowned consultant on motorsports safety, again serves as the IMIS Safety and Technical Conference Coordinator and assembled an incredible lineup of presenters. Two of the presenters are credited with helping develop two of the most significant advances in motorsports safety in the last 20 years.
Dr. Robert Hubbard is the creator of the HANS device, a driver safety feature that led to nearly every major motorsports sanctioning body in the world mandating frontal head restraints (FHR). The HANS device is a head and neck support system that has been credited with reducing injury and saving the lives of several race drivers each year. Hubbard developed and tested the device in the 1980s with his brother-in-law Jim Downing, who was a successful IMSA sports car driver. He continues to refine and develop the device to this day.
Joining Hubbard on the Safety and Technical Conference panel is Dean Sicking from the Midwest Roadside Safety Facility at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Sicking, along with his staff and the Indy Racing League (now INDYCAR), created the Steel and Foam Energy Reduction barrier. Known as the SAFER Barrier, the energy-absorbing units are attached to the walls of every major oval motorsports facility in the United States after first being used in 2002 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
“All of the individuals scheduled to present at the 2011 IMIS Safety and Technical Conference presented by Safety-Kleen have dedicated much time and effort to improving motorsports safety and performance around the world,” Russell said. “I’ve had the opportunity to work with several of these individuals and look forward to them sharing their knowledge and expertise with attendees. The 2011 IMIS Safety and Technical Conference will begin with welcoming remarks from Russell early on Dec. 7. A detailed schedule will be released in the near future.
